One of the key drivers to Small Business in the local economy is the size and composition of the population of Suffolk. The general population provides both the workforce and the customer base of the Small Business community. Any consideration of the future of the Small Business Community has to examine the degree to which the population of Suffolk will change in the future.

Demographic Models

The Population Of Suffolk

The Twelve Tribes Of Suffolk

Small businesses need to sell their offerings if they are to remain in business. As demographic patterns change, reflecting changes in the composition of society, so will patterns of consumer demand change. This part of the project examined a number of changes in the patterns of consumer demand that may affect the Suffolk Small Business Community.

Consumer Trends

THE SUFFOLK SMALL BUSINESS PROJECT

Our consumption patterns are more a reflection of our self-image than anything else. Demographers use the lifestyle statements implicit in our purchases to determine the Lifestyle Tribe to which we belong. When these are aggregated, we can see which Lifestyle Tribes inhabit a given area. This part of the project examined the Lifestyle Tribes that live in Suffolk.

We felt that it was important to provide a base-line from which we could examine the changes to the population of Suffolk over time. Drawing on material for the period 1980-2000, we projected the key trends into the future to cover the period 2000-2020. However, change is not linear, which meant that we also had to factor into our assessment a number of parametric shifts to the population of Suffolk. This part of the project outlines the results of our investigation.
